During a sunny week in June 2024, over twenty young researchers from around the world gathered in beautiful Barcelona to deepen their expertise in qualitative statistics. Hosted by Universitat Pompeu Fabra, this summer school offered an enriching blend of theory and practice, with participants exploring advanced concepts under the guidance of highly experienced, internationally respected academics. The course was thoughtfully organized, balancing theoretical lectures with practical projects, enabling participants to immediately apply their knowledge of new concepts. The welcoming, inclusive atmosphere fostered both personal and professional growth, leaving each participant inspired to advance their research with fresh skills and perspectives. Beyond the classroom, participants enjoyed Barcelona’s stunning architecture and lively culture – an experience that made this learning journey all the more enjoyable and memorable.
This course has been incredibly valuable for me. I am a human geographer and sociologist based at the Lithuanian Centre for Social Sciences, specializing in quantitative data analysis with a focus on inequality, segregation, migration, depopulation, and housing studies. My current research relies heavily on Lithuania’s newly established data infrastructure, which links hundreds of administrative registers and population censuses to cover the entire population. Leveraging this complex system effectively requires advanced statistical expertise. Life course research and sequence analysis had been on my radar for some time, and this summer school in Barcelona provided the perfect opportunity to acquire those skills. I’m already applying these new techniques in my work and am excited to see how they enhance my research outcomes.
