TRANSNATIONAL VISITS

Overview

The COORDINATE Transnational Access Visits (TAV) programme offers researchers in Europe, working in the area of child and youth wellbeing, the opportunity to visit and gain access to international birth cohort, panel and cross-sectional survey data residing in participating countries. Applicants can apply for bursaries of up to €1,250 per week (depending on the subsistence rules in the individual host institutions) to cover travel, accommodation, and subsistence during their visit. The programme is open to academic researchers from PhD students to full professors, as well as policy practitioners and other researchers or analysts working in EU countries and associated states.

The programme funds collaborative research visits of five working days (one week) to fifteen working days (three weeks) in duration. The consortium partners participating in the Transnational Access Visits, along with their available datasets are:

We particularly welcome applications that are proposing cross-national comparisons through comparing datasets, for example, GUI and MCS.

How to apply?

TAV decisions will be announced to applicants approximately one month after the deadline via correspondence from the TAV team.

PLEASE NOTE: Calls for applications for transnational visits are launched every 6 months via the COORDINATE project website and disseminated broadly. Applications received after the deadline of the call will not be reviewed. However, the applicant can submit their application in the next round.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply to the COORDINATE transnational access visits, an applicant must satisfy the following conditions:

the subject of the research proposal is related to child and youth research,
the applicant must work in an EU country or associated country other than the country where the access visit will take place,
the applicant must have a contract or affiliation with a recognised academic or public institution, a not-for-profit organisation, or a registered company in an EU member state or in an associated country which covers the duration of the visit,
applicants not working in an EU or associated country are permitted to apply but are limited to 20% of the total amount of TAVs across all host institutions,
researchers from COORDINATE partner institutions who are not involved in the COORDINATE project are eligible to apply for transnational access visits. However, as the objective of the project is to widen the network of researchers using child wellbeing data, a limited number of grants will be awarded to applicants from COORDINATE partner institutions
PhD students are eligible to apply, however, masters or bachelors students are not eligible.

The total number of visit days awarded is a minimum of 5 working days to a maximum of 15 working days. Applicants may split the visit across different weeks where appropriate (and where this does not exceed the budget), but a visit should be for a total duration of a minimum of 5 working days to the maximum of 15 working days.

Selection

Selection Priorities

The Selection Panel shall base its selection on the scientific merit of the proposal, taking into account that priority should be given to applicants who:

a) are working on projects promoting scientific advancement and align with the goals of the COORDINATE project;

b) have submitted proposals that are feasible for the host institution and dataset.

Priority will be given to early career researchers, those from low GDP countries, and countries with limited experience of longitudinal data collection and analysis. Gender balance will also be prioritised.

Applicants who were previously awarded a transnational access visit award may not apply for a second award. Applicants must use their allocated days within 1 year of the award; exemptions are allowed for maternity and paternity leave.

Selection Panel & Evaluation Procedure

Half of the Selection Panel comprises members of the TAV team and representatives the hosting institutions and half comprise of independent representatives drawn from the COORDINATE International Advisory Board.

The Selection Panel will assess all proposals received and recommend a ranking of applicants that would benefit from a transnational access visit to their institution of choice. Principles of transparency, fairness, and impartiality will be applied throughout the selection process. The Selection Panel will assign them to one of the following categories:

Funding approved
Funding not approved
More suitable institution/dataset identified by the panel for the applicant to visit
Request to resubmit to next call.

Based on their ranking score, a final decision will be made, taking into consideration practicalities and other specific requirements for the access visit.

The applicant will notified of the outcome of the Selection Panel approximately one month after the closing date for each call round.

Travel arrangements & reimbursement procedure

Before the access visits take place, the host institution shall inform the visitor on the reimbursement procedure for the travel and daily subsistence allowance, as well as any costs associated with the visits which cannot be reimbursed by the hosting institution. Claims will be reimbursed in Euro (€) or the local currency of the host institution. Claims will be reimbursed following the submission of certain reports following completion of the visit.

Awardees must submit the reimbursement form to the host institution with complete details, original signatures and original receipts/invoices/boarding pass within 60 days after the end of the access visit. In some cases, the host institution may be able to reimburse travel and accommodation expenses ahead of the visit. This is at the discretion of the host institution.

Engagement Conditions

All TAV projects will be subject to the Research Access and Research Data Management policies of the host institution as guided by the EU Charter for Access to Research Infrastructures.
Successful applicants are required to agree to their project, project description and any results, resulting from their TAV, being highlighted on the COORDINATE website including direct links to conference presentations/journal articles.
Upon completion of the visit, successful applicants must provide a summary of their visit (e.g., general outcomes, satisfaction with visit) in a survey organised by the TAV team.
An acknowledgement must be included, for any published results from the TAV, that the research has received funding from COORDINATE under the European Union H2020 Grant Agreement No. 101008589.
It is recommended (not compulsory) to ensure open access (free of charge online access) to all peer-reviewed scientific publications supported by the COORDINATE transnational access visits.
Consent is required under GDPR guidelines for the processing and storage of personal information and publication of project results.
Funding is subject to EC rules and regulations, e.g., as set out in the Model Agreement.

PLEASE NOTE: the European Commission has the right to publish the list of visitors, containing their names, home institutions and description of the work.
