A productive research visit to UCD

I am Junlin Yu, an Academy Research Fellow at the University of Helsinki, Finland. I study student motivation in educational settings, with a particular interest in creating classroom contexts that foster students' growth mindset.

Thanks to the generous support of the COORDINATE TAV programme, I had the pleasure of visiting University College Dublin (UCD) for three weeks in November 2024. Hosted by Dr Seaneen Sloan and Prof Jennifer Symonds, I was able to work with a unique longitudinal dataset, Children’s School Lives. This project followed two cohorts of nationally representative Irish children between 2019 to 2023, providing valuable insights into the development of their learning, motivation, and wellbeing. During the visit, I had the opportunity to discuss research ideas with my hosts, refine my project, and gain valuable feedback. Their expertise and support were essential to the success of my planned study.

I would like to express my gratitude to the wonderful support staff, especially Dr Ebru Isikli, whose warm welcome and assistance made my stay at UCD truly enjoyable. I also had the pleasure of connecting with other researchers with shared research interests, including Dr Vivian Liu.

Beyond the academic benefits, I had the chance to explore Dublin’s rich culture and history by visiting museums and historical landmarks. I was thriving thanks to the intellectual exchange, mild winter weather, and warm social interactions with people. I am excited to continue the collaborations that began during my time at UCD.
